We use a very simple, but powerful, 1-page planning worksheet with all of our clients that captures the big picture, their long-term goals and also their more immediate goals and 90 day plan.

An Explanation of our Planning Worksheet

Here are the main components of our 1-page planning worksheet and some instructions on how to complete each section:

Vision / BHAG – BHAG stands for Big Hairy Audacious Goal and is a term that was coined by Jim Collins in his book Good To Great. What is the long-term (10-20 year) vision for your business? What would you like you business to look like then?

Mission / Purpose – Why does your business exist (besides to make money)? What is its underlying purpose and what is it here to help others (your customers and the market) achieve?

Values – What behaviours and attitudes are important to you? How would you like your team to behave towards each other and towards your customers?

Target Market – What is your main focus for the next 2-3 years… Who are the customers that you want to focus on? What services will you focus on? Where are these customers ideally located (suburbs, cities, etc)?

3-5 Year Goals – What are your revenue and profit goals for the next 3-5 years and the specific things that you want to achieve (e.g. types of customers/markets, size and make-up of your team, business location, systems, personal goals).

12 Month Goals – What do yo want your business to look like in 12 months and what will you want to achieve by then.

90 Day Goals – Now, more specifically, based on your 12 month goals what are the projects and improvements that you want to achieve in the next 90 days / 3 months.

Person Responsible – Who is the person on your team (employees or contractors) that is mainly responsible for the achievement of each goal.

Action Plan – What actions need to be completed each month to achieve the overall goal for the 90 days. Keep in mind that not all projects need to start in month #1 – prioritise and spread out the actions over the 3 months.
